Blackfish City is a remarkably urgent-and ultimately very hopeful-novel about political corruption, organized crime, technology run amok, the consequences of climate change, gender identity, and the unifying power of human connection. By banding together to save their city before it crumbles under the weight of its own decay, they will learn shocking truths about themselves. The “orcamancer,” as she’s known, very subtly brings together four people-each living on the periphery-to stage unprecedented acts of resistance. When a strange new visitor arrives-a woman riding an orca, with a polar bear at her side-the city is entranced. The city’s denizens have become accustomed to a roughshod new way of living, however, the city is starting to fray along the edges-crime and corruption have set in, the contradictions of incredible wealth alongside direst poverty are spawning unrest, and a new disease called “the breaks” is ravaging the population. Not to mention an orca and a polar bear!” -Ann Leckie, New York Times bestselling author and winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and Clarke Awards After the climate wars, a floating city is constructed in the Arctic Circle, a remarkable feat of mechanical and social engineering, complete with geothermal heating and sustainable energy. So with that in mind, I have some book recs for you that I tried to organize loosely by what you might be looking for next. I tend to think of my stuff in terms of what it is not: gritty, dark, tragic. People come back to my books because I have queer representation, and because they know there will be romance, found family, and an HEA – basically lots of Heroine’s Journeys. I believe that people read my stuff for comfort, because I’m gentle to my characters, and light and fluffy and funny. But after ten years I have some idea, so I hope you’ll humor my list attempts. It’s weird, Gentle Reader, to try to figure out what people like about one’s own books. Zombies now have a lot more to offer, and thank heavens we non-zombies are finally beginning to recognise this.įrom the bestselling novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to the hit TV series The Walking Dead, zombies are infiltrating and enriching our daily lives. Gone are those one-dimensional gut-munching characters from George Romero’s grim and gruesome flick Night of the Living Dead. Although not the most traditional of sex symbols, zombies are truly coming into their own, even landing on the silver screen in romantic roles, not to mention ambling and shambling across the pages of novels and television screens. Cindy, even with her challenges, is shown to have feelings and is shown to be a productive citizen of society by making her own money while doing what she likes to do.The people she works with at the hospice center are sweet to her as well and respect her. I loved how it was written in the thoughts of CIndy and not the thoughts of the others that surround her. The author treats the girl Cindy with respect to her challenges. That is all I will reveal but I will say, the book does have a happy ending. However, the puppy is soon discovered and shipped off to the SPCA. The name given the puppy incidentally is cute too. She takes the puppy with her to her job at a hospice home. She finds a stray puppy and sneaks it into her room. This is a sweet but some what sad little story about a girl named Cindy who lives in a group home.
